The Art and Importance of Crafty Subject Lines

When crafting a good email, you always want to start with the subject line. What is the subject line you might ask? The subject line is the very first thing your email recipients see from you in their inbox. This appears as a few words or a sentence to the right of the sender name. A subject line should give your audience an idea of what they may or may not decide to open. This point right here is exactly why we should focus on creating good subject lines so that our recipients always want to open the emails that we send. Statistics have shown that 47% of people decide to open emails based solely on the subject line. As they say, first impressions matter!

So, how do we create a crafty subject line? For starters, we must get to know our audience. People are more inclined to click on an email with a subject line that intrigues them. Subject lines that evoke curiosity, a sense of urgency, or are even personalized, are likely to grab the audience’s attention. To ensure we do this, we need to know who the audience is! For example, if we know that our audience is largely mothers and parents, we can tailor the subject line to mention an attraction or event that would be fun for their kids. This is even better if we can create a sense of urgency and personalization within it like a limited time promotion for a specific area. More ways that we can do this are by paying attention to the words we use. Instead of saying, “We have a summer ticket sale coming!” try, “Get your summer tickets on sale now!”. By doing this, you are creating a deeper connection to your reader by making it seem like you are talking directly to them rather than a large audience. At the end of the day, people like to feel important so personalize it!

To ensure we make the most out of our subject lines, here are a few more tips and tricks to think about! First, be clear. It seems like a simple task, however, sometimes people miss the whole point. Always make sure that you mean what you say in your subject line and that it is a topic that will be further expanded upon within the email. While we want to create a sense of curiosity within our audience, we do not want to confuse them! Second, keep it short! People are more likely to notice a short and catchy subject line when skimming through their inbox full of emails than a long one. These are just a few more tips to keep in mind when creating your ideal subject lines!

What should we take away from all of this? Let’s recap! Subject lines are so important! Because they are important, we should take our time on them. Craft subject lines that are short, catchy, clear and make people curious to open the full email. So, next time you’re crafting an email, keep some of these tips and notes and mind and hopefully your open rates will increase!
